Wood Construction Arts Cultivation Initiatives JPN: Stakeholders

1) The CCHNT is the main stakeholder, owner of the Okazaki House, founded in 2002.

2) Network for Artisans' Timber Houses: Group of Master Carpenters, founded in 2001.

3) Alliance for Future Timber House: Group of architects founded in 2007.

4) Association for Preservation of Japanese Traditionala Building Techniques: Group of researchers and certified master carpenters working for preservation of cultural heritages founded in 2000.

5) Forum for Timber Building: Association for Promoting the Timber Buildings founded in 2001.

All these associations work together.

The Activities of the CCHNT

2001:　A forerunner of CCHNT named “Samurai Residence Preservation Network” began a series of activities for preservation of “Okazaki House”.

Apr 2002: Tottori City decided to make a survey on the “Okazaki House” and a group was organized for its survey.

Oct 2002: Masako Nakata, one of the Japanese 1st female lawyer, died in this house.

Nov 2002: The organization was reorganized and the CCHNT was born.

Mar 2003: The CCHNT presented its petition to the Tottori City for preservation of the “Okazaki House”.

May 2003: An official document describing the permission of construction of the “Okazaki House” was found.

May 2003: The proposal to classify the “Okazaki House” as a historical site of the city was deferred by the Cultural Heritage Council of the Tottori City.

Apr 2004: The CCHNT became a non-profit corporation.

Apr 2004: Law of Landscape was established.

2004-2007: The CCHNT was appointed as an organizer of Landscape Seminars by Tottori Prefecture.

2004: The survey of the Seismic Properties of the “Okazaki House” was executed with the support of Taisei Environmental Fund.

2007: The CCHNT organized a series of events for demonstrating the Samurai Residence “Okazaki House” under the support of the Toyota Foundation.

May 2007: The CCHNT was nominated as a Landscape Management Organization of the Tottori Prefecture, and the Tottori City ( July 2007).

Jul 2007: The CCHNT established a Fund for Preservation and Utilization of “Okazaki House”.

Jun 2008: The CCHNT petitioned Tottori City to preserve the “Okazaki House”, but Tottori City rejected this petition after the decision made by the Cultural Heritage Council of the Tottori City. The Cultural Heritage Council of Tottori City cannot certify that the “Okazaki House” is a historical site because the premises of the “Okazaki House” are partially sold and it does not maintain the original form.

Jul 2008: The CCHNT demanded that Tottori Prefecture examine the process of the above mentioned rejection.

Oct 2009: The CCHNT purchased the “Okazaki House” to stop the dismantling work that the new owner had begun.

2010: The CCHNT found some clear evidences concerning the relation between the “Yasuhime Palace” and “Okazaki House”.
2010: The Tottori Prefecture prepared a budget for repairing the “Okazaki House” under a necessary condition that the “Okazaki House” is authorized as an Important Construction for Landscape Formation by Tottori City.

2011: Tottori City prepared a budget for repairing the “Okazaki House” under a necessary condition that the “Okazaki House” is certified as an Important Construction for landscape formation by the Landscape Formation Council of Tottori City.
